DIY Dog and Dog Mom Fried Rice

Rice is life

Nearly 50% of the world's population is powered by rice. Although I grew up in an American family (being adopted), the one thing I got from my heritage is my love of rice. As a nutritional powerhouse, this complex carbohydrate has provided me many of meals, especially at breakfast time for me and my family.

Can dogs eat rice? Yes, they can!

White rice is a common go-to for dogs with digestive issues. It's less likely to trigger allergies compared to other grains like wheat or corn. With small amounts of magnesium, phosphorous, and B vitamins rice can support our dog's overall health. It can help firm up loose stools and ease diarrhea.

Should I feed my dogs brown or white rice?

When in doubt consult your vet as there are pros and cons with brown vs white rice for your dogs. White rice is easier to digest and lower fiber. However, it is higher in glycemic index and can spike blood sugar. Brown rice is more nutritious as it is rich in fiber and antioxidants but is harder for some dogs to digest.

Serving tips for dog friendly fried rice

For us, we always serve homemade dog food in moderation. Because I want to ensure my pups nutritional needs are completely met, I typically use dog fried rice as a food topper and not a full time meal. Huskies tend to be picky eaters. However, when I toss a bit of warm doggie goodness that smells delicious, they don't hesitate but to gobble it down.  As a starting point, for any homemade meals adjust based upon the age of your dog, activity level and health factors.  This homemade dog food calculator is a good starting point but please consult your vet for more accurate measurements

How do I make fried rice safe for dogs vs what I eat at home?

On my YouTube channel, I've shared the process of how I make my favorite dish for myself and my four legged friends. Making fried rice safe for dogs is all about stripping it down to only the essentials and avoiding ingredients that could be potentially  harmful to their health. Things to avoid include:
  • Onion, garlic and scallions: toxic to dogs
  • any sauces such as soy sauce or oyster sauce
  • butter, salt, spices
  • processed meats due to high sodium
